Lunar New Year
by Karen Huang
Have you ever wondered why dragon festivals and parades would attract large crowds at the end of January through early February? Well, Lunar New Year celebrations are hosted every year around this time. Several Asian countries like China, Korea, and Vietnam have their own Lunar New Year traditions and celebrations. Some of the commonly shared Lunar New Year traditions would be hosting big feasts with family, exchanging gifts and money, decorating the house with red posters that represent good luck, and watching parades and fireworks. Moreover, most people may recall seeing festivals and dragon parades flood through the streets of Chinatown. During the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Chinese follow the traditions of hosting and watching dragon shows and host fun, carnival-like festivals to keep the spirits of Lunar New Year alive. The Chinese would also exchange red envelopes with loved ones, host family feasts, adorn the house with red decor to represent luck and prosperity, and make sure homes were tidy.
