Sheccid Maccia's: DMHS' Hidden Track Star
by Marissa Guadarrama
It was cold. Colder than she expected it to be. Already, the morning wasn’t going as planned. On the way to the meeting, the bus broke down. But, despite a turbulent start to her morning, Sheccid understood that today—this race—could change her life. Her coaches told her earlier that month she had the opportunity to qualify for state finals, and she wouldn’t let them down. Despite being on a thanksgiving break, she had continued training, and it all culminated at this moment. Months of running, training, and strategic planning on how she’d approach the course to beat some of the best runners in the district. It was all or nothing, now or never. Steadily, she ran the course. She reminded herself not to make the same mistake she had last year. It was all about endurance. Though she’d been trailing behind at the beginning, she knew she could progressively pass all the runners in the downhill runs where she could gain speed. She ran that day with one thing in mind: the hope of qualifying for state and making her team and her coaches proud. To her, the race was a blur. She’d pushed her limits in the home stretch, hoping it’d be enough, but she didn’t know.
