As a new year approaches DMHS, The Helios Newspaper would like to highlight the Fashion Magnet currently being instructed by Mrs. Banks. The fashion program incorporates research, art, design, and business commerce into its coursework and students learn to work skillfully and safely using home and industrial sewing machines to create clothing pieces.
Through the course, students will be given a chance to meet with industry professionals and go on field trips to the Los Angeles Fashion district. Students will be prepared for higher education and career readiness, and some will be able to participate in both paid and unpaid internships pertaining to fashion careers. Nearing the end of the year during the spring semester, the program has a final fashion show showcasing pieces from the fashion design and construction students. A question asked to Mrs. Banks was: why did you decide to teach this subject, and what interests you about it? This is what she had to say.
“I became a Fashion instructor to enrich the lives of young people both in fashion skills and life skills. I have been an entrepreneur for over 30 years and love creating beautiful garments for my clients. Giving back what I’ve learned over the years and making it relatable, gives me joy.” - Mrs. Banks Mrs. Banks is very passionate about her teachings and wishes her students to have successful careers. Students within the magnet can look forward to the future with what they’ve been taught at DMHS and use it in their careers if they decide to pursue that.
